Motorists are being reminded to ensure their headlights are working.

Road policing officers have spotted an increasing number of vehicles using displaying running lights, instead of dipped headlamps, risking the safety of themselves and other motorists.

Officers fear that modern cars, which display an illuminated dashboard when automatic day lights are on, are misleading drivers to think their head and rear lights are on.

Adam Pipe, casualty reduction manager, said: “Although this is mainly an issue with new cars, we’re asking all drivers to make sure their lights are on when daylight fades.

“Fully functioning lights are vital for the safety of the driver and their passengers as well as other road users who may struggle to see vehicles approaching if they aren’t displaying the correct lights for the conditions.

“Please take a minute before you set off on your journey, however short it may be, to make sure you have fastened your seatbelt and your lights are on.”
