RADWINTER Primary School waved goodbye to its long-serving headteacher this week – although he will be returning in November!

Melvyn Catton, 58, called it a day after being in charge of the village school for 27 years, but will return to cover the acting headteacher’s maternity leave through to Easter.

His retirement was marked at the school with a theme week – based on his favourite topic, natural history – and, on Saturday when villagers gathered to see him unveil the village’s new sign. The sign was painted by Brenda Bennett from designs by the schoolchildren, and was made by Mark Halls.

Following the ceremony, pupils past and present gathered for a farewell barbecue.

Mr Catton said: “I have loved every minute of my 27 years but I am looking forward to pottering around in my garden – for now.”

Mr Catton has overseen a complete refurbishment of the school, and his dream to see a new hall opened was realised in 2007.

Chairman of governors, Paul Camp, said: “We are very sad to see Melvyn go after many happy and successful years. We wish him the best of luck.

“Our great team will endeavour to carry out his excellent legacy.”
