A Wendens Ambo man has set a new Guinness World Record for running the fastest half marathon while pushing a double buggy.

Martin Steer, 40, of Royston Road, completed the Stevenage Half Marathon while ferrying his twin sons Luke and Nathan around the 13.1 mile course.

Martin finished in a time of 1 hour and 56 minutes to set the new record on Sunday, November 1, which also happened to be his boys first birthday.

Around 40 friends and family lined the route to cheer him and his children along the way, and the record was confirmed by Guinness last week.

Martin said: “My wife and I are both into our running, and we wanted to continue doing it when the boys arrived. So we invested in a flashy Ironman double buggy to be able to go out with them.

“There is lots you have to do to register the record with Guinness, I had to send off proof of time, two witness statements to say I ran with the boys all the way round, photos from the start and finish, and the race director had to speak to them.

“I really found my arms ached the most around the course, what with the extra weight and steering, which is a change as it’s usually my legs.

“I just wanted to do something that the boys could be proud of in the future and it was great to be able to involve them in the record.”

Martin’s wife Sarah, also 40, will attempt to set the female double buggy record at the Dorney Lake Half Marathon, near Eton, in February.

The running pair are also currently on a quest to complete seven marathons in seven continents, and next October will attempt their seventh - The Volcano Marathon in the Attacama Desert in Chile,

Previously, the couple have run races in the South Pole, London, Sierra Leone, The Great Wall of China in Beijing, Melbourne, and Sacramento.

Completing all seven will put Martin and Sarah in the very exclusive Seven Continents Marathon Club, of which there are currently only 106 male and 28 female members.

Despite all the marathons, Martin insists that he does not love running.

He said: “I wouldn’t call myself a keen runner at all, I actually don’t enjoy the act of running that much. I just like to get outside.”
