THE landlords of a historic Thaxted pub have changed its name in a bid to shake off its previously-shoddy image.

Last year The Rose and Crown pub in Mill End was in the national news when it was closed by then-owner, Nicholas Marchetto, after 23 separate hygiene regulations were broken.

However, mother and daughter team, Jude and Frankie Miller, have marked in a new era for the 16th century pub.

That has started with a new name - The Maypole - which coincides with the villages' traditions.

Frankie said: "The brewery [Greene King] wanted to change the name as the problems with the previous tenants was national news.

"We had been kicking a few names around but chose The Maypole to be in keeping with the village. There is a lot of activity over the summer with the Morris Men and we felt it was appropriate."

The pair, who have a wealth of previous experience, have already stamped their mark on the ancient building. Out have gone the dark, tatty upholstery; in has come some stylish carpets and furniture to compliment the oddly-worldy feel of the place.

"When we walked in the place felt regimented," said Frankie. "We have changed the lay out, as well as replacing some of the furniture and carpets. We have also got Sky television.

"We just gave it a bit of a clean up, breathing some life into it. We both really like the building - it looks like a pub should do, with a large open fire, and large windows at the front."

She added: "We feel that there is enough business in the village to accommodate us and the other establishments."

The pair have plans to get the kitchen up and running with the next month, serving pub food and light bites, and also want to expand the garden to accommodate a barbeque for events and parties. They also plan to continue on from the successful opening night live music feature with similar events.
