A WORLD-RENOWNED pop-up book designer visited Friends' School in Saffron Walden to show students the art of making a book spring to life.

Paper engineer Nicholas Denchfield is well known for creating fabulously intricate pop-up books and his work is admired for its wit, invention and ingenuity.

Nick, who is the creator of the staggeringly successful series of books illustrated by Anne Sharp and includes the titles Dinosaur Park and Magical Beasts, held a workshop for Years Six and Seven.

The students were shown a number of wonderful and complicated examples of paper engineering and were then shown how to make a pop-up book of their own.

All of the students thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and the chance to see how pop-up books are made. Year Seven pupil, Alex Van Enis, said: "It was great fun and a once in a lifetime opportunity.
