The Mayor of Saffron Walden arrived in style on Santa’s sleigh to switch on the town’s Christmas lights on Sunday, November 29.

Around a thousand people braved the windy and wet conditions to enjoy live music, seasonal stalls and mulled wine in the packed Market Square.

The action began at 10am and 10 musical acts, including the Carver Barracks Military Wives Choir and The Hooligans, entertained the crowds throughout the day.

Town mayor Heather Asker appeared later in the afternoon with Father Christmas to deliver sweets to more than 200 waiting children and switch on the town’s festive illuminations.

Councillor Asker said: “It was a wonderful day, despite the weather. I hope the children enjoyed it and all the organisers and market stall holders deserve credit for such a great family event.

“The Market Square and King Street were absolutely packed, and it really was Saffron Walden doing its finest.”
