Firefighters had to withdraw from a blaze at a Tudor home in Essex this morning after the property became unstable.

Crews were called to the fire in High Street, Newport, near Saffron Walden, at around 5.30am, and arrived to find the building completely filled with smoke with flames spreading through the ground floor and roof area.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property to check no one was inside. However they had to withdraw as the structure of the two storey building became unstable.

An aerial ladder platform was called in to get more water on the roof of the detached property.

By 8.20am, the fire had been put out and the incident was scaled down from six to four engines and the aerial ladder.

The High Street was closed while crews worked to extinguish remaining “hot spots”.

Firefighters left by 3pm.

A spokesman for Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said an investigation will be carried out to establish the cause of the fire.
