FIREFIGHTERS battled for almost two hours to rescue a horse which was found collapsed in a stream in an Essex village.

A specialist animal rescue unit from South Woodham attended the scene in Great Sampford at about 3.30pm on Tuesday (June 11), and worked alongside crews from Saffron Walden and Great Baddow.

The horse was found collapsed in ankle deep water and firefighters reported that it was “laying on its side through exhaustion”.

They had rescued the horse by 5.20pm.
