Firefighters rescued two people from a house fire in Saffron Walden this morning (Monday).

Emergency crews were called to the blaze, in Hamilton Mews, just after midnight.

Firefighters gained entry to the home and rescued a man and a woman, in their forties, from the first floor of the property and led them to safety.

Crews treated the pair with oxygen therapy as they were suffering from smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is unknown. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service and the police will be carrying out an investigation.
