FIREFIGHTERS spent the best part of four hours tackling a raging barn fire in Radwinter during the early hours of Saturday morning.

Two crews from Saffron Walden and crews from Newport and Thaxted were called to the single storey, open-sided barn at Sellands Farm, Hempstead Road at around 1.40am.

The barn, which was used to store around 100 tonnes of bailed straw and as a vehicle workshop, was 100 per cent alight. Firefighters used four main jets and two hose reels to extinguish the blaze by around 5.15am.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage and an investigation will be carried out.
