A former Friends School pupil will be returning to Saffron Walden this week when he performs as a clown to hundreds of circus visitors.

Sacha Santus, 35, has been part of his family’s Santus Circus for almost 20 years after he left boarding at the school to take up the likes of juggling, stilt-walking, and hula-hooping.

“It’s a pretty cool job, but hard work,” he said.

“Being a clown involves a lot of running around and emotions and trying to get the audience to liven up.”

The circus has roots in France going back generations, but its English branch was set up by Sacha’s father Earnest, 69, and his brother Roger.

Sacha added: “I like seeing the kids laughing and hearing that is the most important thing for me.”

The Santus Circus is at Saffron Walden Common from May 24 -29.

Tickets start at £9 and can be booked on 07843 884787 or at
