Former Saffron Walden town clerk releases locla history book

A FORMER town clerk's local history project will come to fruition next week when his new book is published.
Malcolm White served the town for 34 years before his retirement last year. Since then he has been following his interest in local history and his first project related to a task that frequently recurred during his time as clerk when the council was asked to name new developments in the town.
Whenever possible a name with a historical association was chosen, and exploring the stories behind both the new and old street names resulted in his new book, The Place Names of Saffron Walden, to be published on July 15.
Mr White said: “I hope this book helps to illustrate some of these influences on the history of the town and how they have helped to create a unique and special place.
“Local history should not just be facts and dates, but also about people, their lives, their work, their hobbies and interests, their environment.”
Mr White, who a decade ago published the best-selling Saffron Walden’s History: a Chronological Compilation, originally trained as a chartered librarian and also holds an MA in Local & Regional History.
The 116-page book is illustrated with over 80 photographs, many by the late David Campbell, and street name signs by well known local photographer Gordon Ridgewell.
The book has been published by SWHS Publications, a non-profit making concern sponsored by the Saffron Walden Historical Society and its journal.
The hon editor Jacqueline Cooper said: “SWHS Publications was set up to help authors publish research of Saffron Walden and north-west Essex, and we are delighted to have the opportunity of publishing what promises to be a fascinating addition to the town’s local history.
The Place Names of Saffron Walden costs £8.50 and all orders received before the launch date or at the launch on July 15 will result in £1 per book donation to the Teenage Cancer Trust.
