PUPILS at Saffron Walden County High School showed they can mix technology with food, Heston Blumenthal-style.

Around 40 students took part in the after-school science and engineering club and, guided by the teachers, used liquid nitrogen to freeze marshmallows, bananas and ice cream. They also froze flowers before smashing up the frozen objects with a hammer.

The event was part of Science Week at the school.

Jo Jackson said: "We do a lot of nice stuff with the Year 7 and 8 but this was a special event to highlight the subject. These workshops can keep the children interested in the subject.

"It was a big hit. Most people don't get to see how liquid nitrogen and the students know it is a one-off. There is a real buzz and the students are still talking about it."

The rest of the school took part in various lessons and practicals geared up to their level throughout the week.

"We have been trying to implement the subject through various events throughout the week," added Miss Jackson.
