EXACTLY one year after an elderly Whittlesford man died in a fire in the village, police are again appealing for help from the public.

Kenneth Nunn, 85, died when his house on Newton Road, in which he had lived for more than 80 years, was set on fire during the night of Tuesday September 6, 2005.

Forensic work later discovered petrol at the scene, strongly suggesting that the fire was started deliberately.

Detectives are revisiting the scene of the fire today (Thursday) and distributing appeal posters in an attempt to gather more information.

Det Chief Insp Jason Gordon, who is leading the investigation, said: "We have not yet been able to find the person responsible. Someone out there knows who set this fire and I would appeal directly to them today to do the right thing and contact officers.

"Think back to this time last year. Did the behaviour of a family member or friend change? Where was that person during the evening of Tuesday September 6 and the early hours of Wednesday September 7"

A mobile police station will be situated on Newton Road throughout today (Thursday) with officers present to speak to anyone who may have any information related to the fire.

Det Chief Insp Gordon said that Mr Nunn was a quiet man who kept himself to himself and worked on the land and with animals before retiring.

He said: "I can still find no reason as to why anyone would want to harm Kenneth."

Whittlesford Parish Council clerk Ian Skellern described Mr Nunn as "one of the characters of the village" and "a nice old boy" following his death last year.

Anyone who has any information, no matter how small, should visit the mobile police station in Newton Road, Whittlesford, call Cambridgeshire police on 08454 564564 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
