GCSE results: Felsted School celebrate five per cent increase from last year

Ninety seven per cent of students achieved 5 A* to C grades - 92pc of these included both Maths and English - and 16 pupils received just A* and A results.

One of Felsted’s top achievers, Sam Mitchell, from Bannister Green, gained ten A* grades and one A grade.

He said: “I am really happy with my results and was surprised to get so many A*s.”

He will now go on to take A Levels in Latin, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths - with a view to possibly studying Law at university.

It was feared nationally there would be a drop in results due to a crackdown on continuing exam inflation.

But Felsted sustained and even enhanced GCSE grades at all levels.

Dr Mike Walker, headmaster at the school, said “I am thrilled with these really excellent GCSE results in what is increasingly a tough climate for candidates.

“All of the talk about the tightening up on GCSE marking which has been applied this year has seen our students rise to the challenge and do exceptionally well, indeed building on the excellent percentage of A* and A grades from last year with a five per cent increase.

“It has been a great team effort and it is all down to our students’ commitment and hard work and the great support of the teaching staff.”

There were 100 students who took the GCSE’s this year and 48pc received A* or A grades, 71pc A* to B grades and 91pc A* to C grades.

Edmund Lucas, from Wethersfield, secured nine A*s and one a grade.

He said: “I did so much better than I expected and am really happy with my results. I am going to be taking A Levels in Economics, Maths, Chemistry and Geography.”
