DOG owners in Uttlesford are being given the opportunity to have their pet microchipped for free by the district council’s animal warden.

Sue Knight is launching a challenge to have as many dogs in the district microchipped as possible by the end of 2013 and, thanks to The Dogs Trust, a limited number of chips are available free of charge.

She said: “Uttlesford District Council is committed to helping dog owners and I am very grateful to the Dogs Trust for providing these microchips. I would therefore urge owners of unchipped dogs in the area to get in touch as soon as possible.”

Microchipping is a quick and painless procedure which greatly increases the chances of pet and owner being re-united should it go astray and Sue can carry it out in your home, by appointment.

Although your dog must by law when in a public place wear a collar and ID tag showing your name and address, microchipping your dog provides a more permanent way of identifying it should it stray.

It also helps reduce the number of stray dogs entering rescue centres or being put to sleep through no fault of their own.
