EXEMPLARY in every respect" is how Ofsted inspectors described the Saffron Walden County High School.

The school was given a glowing review by inspectors, receiving "good" or "outstanding" verdicts in every area.

Headteacher John Hartley, said: "I am delighted the school's many strengths have been recognised.

"The inspectors' description of the sixth form as being outstanding and exemplary was a very welcome recognition of the consistently excellent A-level exam results of recent years, and the diverse range of opportunities offered to the sixth formers."

Inspectors rated the overall effectiveness of the school as being "good".

Reporting inspector Mark Phillips said: "By the end of Year 11, students are achieving results that are well above average overall.

"The school is at the forefront of developing curriculum provision with the aim of challenging students to achieve at the highest levels and also meeting individual, personalised learning needs."

The report said Mr Hartley and his staff were "an outstanding team with an inclusive style of leadership, where governors, staff and students all have a part to play in school improvement".

Although the secondary school was not rated quite as highly as the sixth form, it still received well above average scores and did not fall down below "good" in any area.

Inspectors noted that students were happy and that they enjoyed their education and behaved well.

Mr Phillips said: "Only a relatively small number of students show inappropriate behaviour, and they are dealt with appropriately."

"All staff are committed to working hard to raise still further individual student achievement.

"I would like to pay tribute to the immense dedication of the staff in helping students become confident, empowered learners and achieve excellent examination results.
