At the January meeting Hilary Walker based her very talk, which she called "Comings and Goings," on her studies of Saffron Walden's own 18th century archives. At that time it was a town of about 2500 people, with well marked social divisions. The prosperous "professionals" lived in the large High Street houses, while the really poor lived in the Castle Street area. The "gentry" however, chose to live out-of-town.
