HOLOCAUST Memorial Day was marked by a service at St Mary's Parish Church Saffron Walden on Wednesday January 27.

Over 200 people of all ages, including many schoolchildren, joined in the service to remember and reflect.

Everyone present was invited to write a prayer on a paper 'leaf' and place it on the bare tree to symbolise hope and the healing of the nations, and to pledge themselves to play their part in building a stronger and safer society.

Otto Deutsch, a survivor of the Kindertransport scheme which brought Jewish children to England shortly before the Second World War, spoke of leaving his family in Vienna and his gratitude to the English couple who had taken him in and brought him up.

Leslie Wheeler from the Cambridge Reform Synagogue recited the Jewish Mourners' Kaddish, while pupils from Dame Bradbury School sang the Prayer of St Francis, 'Make me a Channel of your Peace'.
