A well attended meeting was held on November 7 at the Bowls Club in Abbey Lane when members were pleased to welcome Mike Thurlow, head gardener at the Audley End Organic Kitchen Garden. He gave a talk entitled Vegetables Around the Year and took with him some seasonal vegetables and lots of seeds, some of which he generously gave away at the end of the evening. As on previous occasions, Mike gave an interesting, entertaining and amusing presentation. With his fast-talking style he is able to impart the maximum amount of useful tips and information in the short time available. Work on the organic kitchen garden began in 1999 and working practices are based on those of William Cresswell, Victorian gardener at Audley End. Varieties grown are those used in the Victorian era and, to ensure authenticity, many seeds are obtained from the Heritage Seed Library. The organic vegetable garden works on a four crop rotation system, which ensures the best use of the soil. Mike worked his way through the four types of crops describing soil preparation, best planting and harvesting times, as well as many useful hints as to how to ensure vegetables for the kitchen throughout the year.
On behalf of all those present, Gerda Goddard thanked Mike Thurlow for his very enjoyable and informative talk. The next meeting will take place on December 5 at the Bowls Club in Abbey Lane, starting at 8pm when the AGM will be followed by a talk by Ken Akers on Plants for a Cool Greenhouse.
