Some 300 people enjoyed the Hangi Hog, a Maori and English festival in Radwinter on Saturday (June 11).

The event offered both a hog roast and food from a traditional New Zealand underground oven, where meat and vegetables are steamed slowly in a cage in the earth.

Organiser David Emberson said: “Both types of food were equally popular.”

Also equally well attended were the traditional English Maypole dancing and the Haka workshop where people learned the dance the All Blacks, the New Zealand rugby team, do at the start of matches. Music was supplied by guitarists Jason Thompson and Hollie Haines and saxophonist Matt Richardson.

Mr Emberson said: “It was a lovely village setting, the sun was warm, the food was excellent, we had a good beer tent, a good raffle and good tea tent. It was an informal event with people from the village and from outside as well.”

The event, which replaced the usual village fete, also celebrated the Queen’s birthday and raised more than £2,500 for Radwinter’s new sports pavilion, expected to be started later this year.
