ESSEX Police are continuing their investigations into numerous reports of ‘loud bangs’ in the Reporter area on Sunday night.
The police joined Essex Fire and Rescue Service crews in receiving calls from residents in the Henham, Wimbish and Saffron Walden areas at around 8pm.
Some residents reported feeling an ‘earthquake’ on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. Other reports have suggested that the explosion was caused by a near-by electricity sub-station.
However, Inspector Kevin Wakefield of Saffron Walden police insisted that the cause of “loud bangs is currently not known”.
“An Essex Police investigation is ongoing. We are liaising with other agencies in our attempt to identify the cause of this incident,” he said.
“The loud noises were heard across a large part of west and north Uttlesford, and I would ask anyone with information or who witnessed anything suspicious during the evening of January 16, to contact police on 0300 333 4444.”
