PUB landlords are being warned to be wary of requests for cash following a Stansted incident.

The owner of a pub in the village was called by a man who said that he wanted to book a surprise birthday party for his wife and he would have a cake delivered to the premises.

The caller then asked if he could borrow £1000 to buy a vehicle, saying that he would repay the loan when paying for the party. The landlord refused.

Crime reduction advisor, Peter Caulfield, said: "This could be a con and other pubs may be approached by the caller.

"Any such request should be turned down.
