A LIB Dem councillor has been re-elected back onto Saffron Walden Town Council.

Mike Hibbs, twice a mayor of the town, won yesterday’s by-election in Audley Ward after scooping 604 votes, beating Conservative Tom Smith (521 votes) and Labour’s Marion Green (182 votes).

He returns to the council after losing his seat in the local elections in May by just 16 votes - and he breaks up the order of total Tory domination on the council.

He was delighted to win back the seat. On his Twitter account last night, Cllr Hibbs said: “Thank you to the residents of Saffron Walden’s Audley ward, who elected me to the Town Council tonight.”

The seat had become available following the resignation of John Shatford in August.

Turn out for yesterday’s election was 32.5 per cent.
