HALLOWEEN hilarity was had by youngsters attending a Monster Party at Saffron Walden's Baptist Church on Tuesday evening.

More than 80 five to 11-year-olds enjoyed ghoulish games and creepy capers at the party, and Reverend Simon Mattholie hopes it will become an annual event.

"I started here in September 2005 and this was the first Monster Party we've had and I'm sure it will be the first of many," he said.

"There have been lots of stories in the news about children misbehaving or not being safe when they go out trick or treating, so the party allowed them to have fun in a safe environment and put parents' minds at rest.

"I think the party showed to the children that church can be fun as the vast majority of those who came along were not from church-going families."

An eyeball relay was the highlight of the evening, which saw the children racing with pickled onions in an egg and spoon game.

The youngsters also took part in apple bobbing and a fancy dress competition, before watching cartoons.
