Little Walden author Sally Goddard - under pen name Sam Russell - has launched her second racy romance novel A Bed of Brambles.
Sally Goddard, 53, launched her second book, A Bed of Brambles, under her pen name, Sam Russell, on Friday, March 3.
From her background working with horses, living and working with her husband on their farm in Little Walden and now that she has grown up children, Sally has found time to draw on real life experience to bring her rural romance to life.
Speaking about what first inspired her to write a novel, Sally said: “I have always wanted to write. When my father was ill, I was looking for romantic escape. I piled through a great number of books that didn’t quite do it for me and I thought, ‘You’ve always wanted to write, and if you can’t find the right thing, why not write it yourself?’”
The second novel continues the tempestuous tale of romance begun in the first Draymere Hall novel, A Bed of Barley Straw, which sees stable manager Hettie Redfern become romantically entangled with a mysterious man who returns to the Hall.
Speaking about her characters, Sally added: “They’re such real people to me, they’re family to me now. I know them better than I know my kids these days! I call my kids their names sometimes, that’s how bad it gets!
“They [the characters] take on a life of their own and sometimes they surprise me.”
A Bed of Brambles went through at least four versions, with Sally at her desk until midnight on many occasions, before making it to the proof-reader.
Sally will be launching her book in person at The Crown pub in Little Walden at 8pm on Monday, March 20, where she will do a book signing and read extracts from the novel.
“The books are quite steamy, people seem to enjoy that bit!,” she said,
“The whole idea of my books is that you are taken off to another world and close the book happier than when you started.”
A Bed of Brambles and its prequel are available to buy at Hart’s Books in Saffron Walden and are available as e-books from online retailers.
