Firefighters from Saffron Walden, Newport and Great Dunmow were called to the fire on the northbound carriageway between junction 8 at Stansted and Wicken Road at 11.14am.

The lorry, carrying 40 tonnes of wood, was well alight. The fire was extinguished by 11.50am.

Station Officer Paul Curtis, of Saffron Walden Fire Station, said: “The quick actions of the driver prevented the fire from spreading further, which also prevented a lengthy motorway closure.

“Firefighters acted promptly to extinguish the fire and make the incident scene safe. We believe a tyre on a tractor, which was being transported on the lorry, caught alight.”
