MOUNTFITCHET Mathematics & Computing College in Stansted is undergoing a major revamp including a new name and new uniforms for its pupils.

From the beginning of the new academic year in September, the school will be known as Forest Hall School, taking its name from the newly built housing development on its doorstep.

Headteacher Catherine Anderson said: “A lot has happened at the school in the last few years and not always for the best.

“With that in mind, the decision to change the name and re-launch the school was a bold step in anyone’s book, but it was a change which was needed, both for the school and the community.”

Staff and pupils at the college have been celebrating a good end to the academic year with students notching up significant wins in sporting events, exhibiting at the National Schools’ Art Competition and donating a portrait to St Mary’s Church. Pupils also sung at the Young Concern Trust annual garden party and exhibited their work at the Eastern Region Big Bang event at Duxford.

The year was topped off by the school being judged as good in a recent Ofsted inspection.

Forest Hall School will be launched with the same high expectations that have seen recent improvements both in terms of approach and aspirations, Mrs Anderson explained.

“As a small school we will continue to attract students who require additional support, but we are also now attracting students who should be looking to university as the minimum,” she added.

“This means that our profile will change and with this comes raised attainment overall.”

The headteacher said education remained “a life-long learning journey” and wants to see “every individual working hard to ensure they achieve their potential and not fall short of the next step or hurdle”.

The school has installed new facilities, with further upgrades being made to the building itself and, according to Mrs Anderson, the outlook is “pretty rosy” for Forest Hall School.

An open day/evening is being held at the school on Wednesday September 18. Mrs Anderson said she and her staff were looking forward to welcoming everyone who is keen to see the progress the school has been making.
