A SAFFRON Walden man broke down sobbing in the dock at Chelmsford Crown Court on Thursday as he was jailed for four years over a sexual relationship with a fourteen-year-old girl.
The court heard how Dean Mansell called the police himself and confessed to his crimes after the offences came to light.
Mansell, 41, of Orchard Way, Saffron Walden, admitted five charges of sexual activity with a child, two offences of engaging in sexual activity. He was ordered to sign on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
Judge Christopher Ball QC told Mansell: "You exploited this girl. You sexually corrupted her for your own gratification."
Judge Ball said he took into account Mansell's genuine remorse, but added: "Anyone who behaves in this way will be dealt with harshly. It's a great pity because I've read references from many friends who think highly of you."
Russell Butcher, prosecuting, said the offences concerned Mansell's relationship with a teenage girl over an 18-month period between January 2005 and October 2006.
It began with sexual touching and culminated with Mansell having sexual intercourse with the girl on three occasions.
Defence counsel Dylan Moses said Mansell "Went straight down to the police station and made full admissions" once the matters came to light.
"He openly admits his wrongdoing and hasn't sought to downplay his role. He takes full responsibility," said Mr Moses.
Mansell was genuinely remorseful. "The guilt he feels on a daily basis eats him up," said Mr Moses.
