PEOPLE are being advised to exercise caution when travelling in the Saffron Walden area following the theft of several manhole covers.
Thieves stole at least four metal covers, worth about 200, from Debden Road overnight on Friday.
Saffron Walden Inspector, Kevin Wakefield, said: “I would urge pedestrians, cyclists and motorists to be alert and to exercise reasonable caution when travelling around the Saffron Walden area in case you accidentally come across an exposed manhole.
“This is a reckless crime, which potentially endangers members of the public travelling along these roads, and will cost taxpayers a significant sum of money in paying for the covers to be replaced.”
People are being urged to call the police on 999 if they see any suspicious activity on the roads, particularly at night time when routine road maintenance is not carried out.
