THE mayor and mayoress enjoyed a special Pancake Day treat on Tuesday (February 21) when they sampled crepes served up by a charitable mobile caterer.
Owner of Planet of the Crepes, Pete Edwards, donated all his proceeds for the day to the Uttlesford Volunteer Centre, which is the mayor’s charity, after agreeing to set up a stall in the market square in Saffron Walden. He raised �77 and rounded it up to �100 to donate to the volunteer centre.
Mayor Cliff Treadwell, who had a go at making some crepes himself, said: “The volunteer centre is integrated with all the charity shops around the town and helps supply volunteers to a wide range of charitable organisations.
“The donation from Mr Edwards will continue to raise the centre’s profile and I hope we can keep collecting money to see it grow still further.”
Lizzie Petrie, manager of the volunteer centre, praised Mr Edwards for his idea and said it was nice to see everybody in the town working together to help each other.
• A popular market trader who earned the nickname ‘Del Boy’ after appearing on The Weakest Link has also donated about �40 to the Uttlesford Volunteer Centre. Graeme Barham, known locally as Curly, bought himself an Only Fools and Horses Reliant Regal and gave punters the opportunity to get their photo taken with it in front of his stall just before Christmas.
