Hundreds of children in Saffron Walden will learn the fundamentals of first aid this winter, as the mayor’s chosen charity St John Ambulance offers a one-day training course to schools in the area.
Radwinter C of E Primary School leads the way on November 11, when 30 pupils are taught to deal with asthma, burns, shock and severe bleeding amongst other conditions.
Wimbish Primary School, St Thomas More Catholic Primary School and St Mary’s C of E Primary School are already signed up to the initiative, and a further nine schools have been offered the course.
“We also want to get secondary schools and the public involved,” said coordinator Gemma Martin. “But to get primary schools on board is a great start.”
The free training comes on the back of Save a Life September, the ambulance’s annual campaign to raise awareness of first aid to the public. This last month the community ambulance service has held thousands of free demonstrations in a number of public areas, including Tesco on Radwinter Road.
