PETER Thompson mastered the Mansfield Half Marathon and picked up a British Championship medal.

The 48-year-old Saffron Walden runner, who is a member of the Peterborough-based Nene Valley Harriers club, lined up alongside 2,000 athletes from across the country, coming 19th in the Masters event and finishing 3rd in the 45-50 age category.

He said: "For the first couple of miles the conditions were reasonable, but then the temperature and the humidity really started to rise.

"The weather, in combination with a very tough and hilly course, meant fast times were not going to happen.

"I completed the course utterly exhausted in one hour and 18 minutes, but I am absolutely delighted with my success - it makes all the hard work in training and the pain on the day worthwhile.

"My previous best placing in a British Championship event was 6th place, so even though my time was three or four minutes slower than I would have liked, I am delighted to have won a medal.
