A WOMAN was lucky to escape with serious, but not life-threatening, injuries after her car was sandwiched between a lorry and a tree.

The accident happened on Cambridge Road in Little Abington on Saturday at about 1pm.

The 29-year-old was driving her green Volkswagen Polo from Haverhill towards Cambridge when the car was in collision with a lorry travelling in the opposite direction.

The impact sent both vehicles smashing though a garden fence and across the driveway of Abington couple John and Louise Brock.

The white Volvo lorry, being driven by a 44-year-old Haverhill man, came to a rest crushing the upturned hatchback against a tree.

Firefighters from Cambridge and Linton attended the scene and cut the woman free from the wreckage of the car.

She was anaesthetised at the scene before being taken by ambulance to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.

Mrs Brock believes the lorry was the fifth to have hit a pedestrian refuge in the middle of the road outside their house since it was installed four years ago.

"The drivers misjudge the width of the road by the refuge, where it narrows," she said. "A similar accident happened just in January, and there have been three others too, although one driver managed to bring his lorry to a stop before it caused any damage.

"The refuge needs to be removed - at the moment there is just no margin for error and we really want something done about it.

"The woman in Saturday's accident was very lucky to get out alive and I worry it's only a matter of time before someone is killed.

"The family a couple of doors down won't let their children walk alongside the road here because it's so dangerous."

Mrs Brock is trying to organise a meeting with Cambridgeshire County Council's highways department to discuss the possibility of altering the road to improve its safety.

Meanwhile, police are hoping someone who witnessed the crash will come forward with information.

PC Ian Gray, from Sawston Road Policing Unit, said: "I would like to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time this collision happened.

"The road was busy at the time and I am confident someone saw what caused the crash. I would also like to speak to anyone who saw either of the vehicles involved just before the collision."

Anyone with information should contact PC Gray on 08454 564564.
