A LEGENDARY electric-guitar player took a special class at Saffron Walden's school of rock on Tuesday.

Grammy-nominated musician Wurzel, from the heavy metal band Motorhead, spent the day with young people at the youth centre on Fairycroft Road.

Uttlesford youth worker Jiff Godfrey said: "For the young people just to have contact with people who have been there and done it in the music business means a great deal. It was an inspirational day and a real success."

Organised by Essex County Council and music promotion agency TBA Productions, the day was part of a week-long programme of music-related activities.

The youngsters learnt skills in performance from a drama teacher as well as how to rig a stage and where to position the microphones.

"I would say there is a lot of potential in the group and we could well have some superstars on our hands," said Mr Godfrey. "Some of the young people are phenomenally gifted musicians who work very hard at what they do. Some of them have started to form bands."

The idea of the rock school was born out of the sessions which are held at the youth centre on Fairycoft Road which give young people access to live music and regularly attract 60 people a session.
