THE possibility of devastating floods at various points in Saffron Walden could soon be over for good when new drainage schemes are completed.

Funded by Essex County Council Highways, the first scheme at Bridge Street and Windmill Hill has been completed with no disruption to traffic on the busy B184 into the town centre.

The second scheme at the junction of High Street and George Street will commence shortly following completion of surveys.

Chairman of the Saffron Walden Town Centre Working Group, Cllr Alastair Walters, said: "This is very good news indeed for Saffron Walden and clearly demonstrates that Essex County Council Highways are getting on with the job of resolving concerns important to local residents."

Mr Walters also stressed that county highways is working hard to repair damaged roads, caused by the recent severe weather conditions.

"The whole country has a major problem with severe damage to roads caused by the worst weather conditions in over two decades," he said.

"Now that the weather has improved, Highways are out and about permanently repairing the most serious potholes as a priority.

"We will be working throughout the Uttlesford area on an urgent programme of pothole repair work as and when weather conditions allow."

To report a pothole, call 0845 603 7631 between 8.30 am and 5 pm, Monday to Friday.
