A total of 50 garages in Saffron Walden will be demolished to make way for three new homes, Uttlesford District Council (UDC) has announced.

The garages at two sites in Sheds Lane, either side of Howard Road, will be knocked down to accommodate two new two-bedroom houses and a purpose built, three-bedroom bungalow to meet the needs of a particular family.

The planning committee at UDC approved the proposals for the council-owned properties and notice to quit was served on the tenants, with alternative garages offered for those who wanted them.

Councillor Julie Redfern, cabinet member for housing, said: “These new homes will be for local people, and I am particularly delighted that we will be able to support a local family with specific needs.

“This is the second small site of new council-owned houses in Saffron Walden but with nearly 300 cases in the local area on our housing list waiting for homes this is a small but positive contribution.

“We are constantly looking at ways to make best use of our assets. This latest project, which has the backing of the Housing Board and Cabinet, is part of an ongoing development programme.”
