New homes for both people and wildlife are under development in Radwinter.

Evidence of hedgehogs, badgers, water voles, bats, grass snakes, lizards and breeding birds were discovered as work began on The Limes.

Developer Enterprise Property Group commissioned a habitat survey before starting on the 35 new homes.

Bird and bat boxes have been installed in trees and a 30 metre no-go zone was created around an active badger sett, discovered just beyond the site.

Enterprise is establishing a nature reserve to encourage the local wildlife’s habitats and for new residents to enjoy. There will be a public open space running the length of The Limes, complete with footpaths and walkways.

A hibernaculum will also be made to provide refuge for hibernating hedgehogs, toads and snakes. In addition, wildflowers will be sown to encourage insects and to form natural soakaways.

The natural space will be handed over to the parish council when the scheme is finished.
