A DEVOTED daughter’s fundraising exploits was literally a ‘hair-raising’ experience on Hallowe’en night.

Dawn Ramsey, from Duton Hill, had her head shaved at a charity music event held at the Three Horseshoes last Wednesday.

The evening was held to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Care, whose nurses have been looking after her terminally-ill mum, Pat Bellamy.

Mum-of-two Mrs Ramsey said she felt “useless” after her mum’s cancer diagnosis, but wanted to help in any way she could – and she has no regrets about shedding her locks for the cause.

“My hair was never my crowning glory and it is worth more on the floor of the pub than on my head,” she joked. “It was easy in comparison to seeing mum go through chemotherapy.

“Nothing compares to the reality cancer sufferers have to endure. This has shown us that tomorrow is not guaranteed and if you want to do something you have to get on and do it.”

Mrs Ramsey revealed she had thought “long and hard” about how to raise money, deciding that whatever she did had to be “drastic and instant”.

“[Mum’s cancer] was very sudden. We knew she had it but we didn’t expect it to blow up and for it to be so aggressive. I wanted to help but I didn’t want it to be easy because that would trivialise the whole idea,” she added.

“I shaved my head because people with cancer don’t have a choice – they have to walk around without hair through no fault of their own.”

The evening at the village pub was a family affair. Mrs Ramsey’s brother Andy Bellamy also had his head shaved in a show of unity, joining her under the clippers which were operated by her niece, Nicole. Her older brother Rick’s band provided the entertainment and Hayley, another niece, raffled a cake.

So far, more than 1,200 has been raised. Mrs Ramsey thanked Derek Connell, the landlord at the Three Horseshoes, for the loan of the pub, and everyone who donated or supported.

And, speaking about her new look, Mrs Ramsey’s 14-year-old daughter Charlotte said: “It’s weird. When I see her I expect to see her with hair ... but I’ll get used to it.”
