The Bicicletta Bike Shop and Café in George Street, Saffron Walden, which sells bikes as well as coffee has won a top place in a UK-wide contest to find the country’s best café.

The Bicicletta, which opened just eight weeks ago, came second in the Best Coffee Stop for Cyclists category and third in Best New Café.

The cafes are nominated and voted for by their customers. The competition was open to any café in the UK and businesses were nominated and voted for on line by their customers. There were more than 60,000 votes this year for 10 categories in the award. The winners were announced at the Caffee Culture event at London Olympia on Wednesday, May 13.

The awards were created by bestselling author and cyclist Chris Ward after the success of his Coffee Stops Tube Map seen by two million people on line. His book Out of Office is a bestseller and he has a background in running campaigns for Britain’s biggest brands and charities. This year is the first that the competition has covered the whole of the UK.

Among the other categories were: coolest baristas, best café for out of office working, and best roasted coffee.
