An “exciting” new website for town history was launched at a meeting of the Saffron Walden Historical Society last week.

Web designer Rosemarie Gant and website editor Jacqueline Cooper gave an illustrated presentation showing the various sections of the site which includes information on the society, the Saffron Walden Historical Journal and the books published under their imprint, SWHS Publications.

Mrs Cooper, who is also editor of the Saffron Walden Historical Journal and chairman of the Uttlesford Recorders, said: “A particularly useful aspect of the website is that it offers free access to over 60 articles from early issues of the journal, which are now out of print. This collection is planned to expand with the addition of dozens more articles in the years to come.

“There are also features offering book reviews of local history publications, history news in the locality, society events, links to other useful websites and obituaries on a number of much-missed local historians from north-west Essex.”

She added: “We would love to hear some feedback from readers as to what they think of the website. Also any new ideas of useful additions.

“It’s the first time there has been a website dedicated to the history of the town, and we hope it will be of interest all over the world – there are many family historians with an interest in this area too.”

The website can be found at saffronwaldenhistory.org.uk with a dedicated e-mail address at saffronwaldenhistory@gmail.com
