A SIXTH form student at Newport Free Grammar School has had a research paper on Alzheimer's disease published by Medlink, an organisation for current and future medical students.

The article by Sophie Burnage is entitled ‘The Future Possibilities of a Change in Diet Leading to the Prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease’.

The youngster wrote the article after attending a Medlink event. She was awarded a distinction for the paper and it was published.

Commenting on her successful publication, she said: “My ambition is to be a doctor and I know that research is at the heart of medicine.

“I enjoyed researching possible cures, treatment or diagnosis for Alzheimer’s disease and it highlighted to me how little people know about it, considering it affects so many people.

“Through this experience I have gained an incredible insight and it has motivated me further to pursue a career as a doctor.”

Assistant headteacher at Newport Mark Norman said: “We are proud of Sophie’s achievement. It is evidence of her talent and commitment and of her teachers’ support and expertise.

“Newport has a good reputation for science and produces a number of medical students each year. We will be supporting Sophie in her application.”
