THE people of Uttlesford and South Cambridgeshire are preparing to remember those who lost their lives serving their country.

In almost every town and village, there will be services held at 11am today Friday), which is Armistice

Day, and has the memorable date of 11/11/11.

And on Remembrance Sunday, church services will be held and poppy wreaths laid at war memorials around the districts as the dead of two world wars and more recent conflicts are honoured.

Clavering, Newport and Arkesden

Fri Nov 11

A two-minute silence will be held at the refurbished War Memorial at the Clavering Christian Centre on Stortford Road from 11am.

Sun Nov 13

Weather permitting, a parade party will form at the Axe and Compasses pub in Arkesden at 10.30am to arrive at St Mary’s Church at 10.45am. Wreaths will then be laid at the memorial in the church grounds and a full service will take place from 11am.

Debden

Fri Nov 11

Residents and school children from Debden Primary School will gather outside the Yuva restaurant in the centre of the village at 10.50am and a two-minute silence will be held at 11am.

There will then be a memorial service at the village hall where the names of all the fallen will be read and wooden crosses laid by the school children.

A service will be held at St Mary’s Church from 10.45-11.45am.

Dunmow

Fri Nov 11

A two-minute silence will be held at the War Memorial on Dunmow High Street at 11am. There will be prayers led by Rev Canon David Ainge of St Mary’s church.

Sun Nov 13

A full memorial service will be held at the War Memorial in Dunmow from 10.50-11.20am.

It will be a 30-minute service attended by the Army Cadet Force, Air Training Corp, Dunmow Guides, Royal British Legion, members of Uttlesford Council, the Dunmow town mayor, police and fire service.

A full church service led by Rev Canon David Ainge will then take place at the United Reform Church on New Street from 11.20am-12.15pm.

Felsted

There will be a two-minute silence held in the centre of the village at 11am.

Sun Nov 13

A wreath-laying service at the War Memorial will take place at 10:30am, followed by a service of remembrance in the Memorial Hall at 10.50am.

There will also be songs of praise for Remembrance Sunday at 4pm in the United Reformed Church.

Finchingfield & District

Fri Nov 11

Residents will gather at the village green from 10.40am for a wreath-laying service at the War Memorial and a two-minute silence at 11am.

Wreaths will be laid at a memorial at St John’s Church with the service beginning at 10:45am.

Hatfield Heath & District

Fri Nov 11

A two-minute silence will be held at the War Memorial in Hatfield Heath from 11am.

Sun Nov 13

There will be a service at the United Reform Church in Hatfield Heath from 9.45am followed by a shorter one at the War Memorial from 10.45am.

Saffron Walden

Fri Nov 11

A short service led by Rev David Tomlinson will be followed by a two-minute silence at the War Memorial on the High Street.

Sun Nov 13

A marching band from Woolwich Barracks, led by Flt Lt Mark Bird, will line up at the War Memorial from 10.45am for a short service alongside veterans, soldiers from 101 Engineer Regiment, army cadets and other uniformed organisations.

Wreaths will be laid and a two-minute silence held at 11am.

The band will then lead the parade down the High Street towards St Mary’s Church.

After the church service from about 11.30am, led by the Rev David Tomlinson, the parade will re-form and march back down the High Street and along King Street, before lining up for a final ceremony and salute in the market square.

Stansted & District

Sun Nov 13

There will be a march down Chapel Hill to the memorial gardens from 10:40am once everybody has gathered in the Crafton Green car park.

A two-minute silence will then be held at the War Memorial in the memorial gardens at 11am and this will be followed by a service at St John’s Church.

Takeley & District

Sun Nov 13

A remembrance service will be held at the Takeley War Memorial at the Silver Jubilee Hall from 10am for 10.30am. A two-minute silence will be held at 11am and local community groups are invited to attend and send representatives.

Thaxted & District

Fri Nov 11

A two-minute silence will be held at Thaxted Guildhall on Town Street from 11am led by Rev Raymond Taylor.

Sun Nov 13

A parade including scouts, girl guides and the local fire brigade will take place from 10.30am at the Guildhall. The procession will march to the parish church for a full service beginning at 10.45am. After the service, there will be a wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorial.

Duxford Imperial War Museum

Sun Nov 13

Duxford Imperial War Museum will be holding a special service of remembrance with free admission to the museum on Remembrance Sunday.

A two-minute silence will be held across the museum at 11am, commencing and concluding with a traditional gun salute presented by The Garrison.

There will also be a number of activities in the museum throughout the day and a service will be held from 12.30pm in the Conservation Hall in AirSpace where the Sawston Youth Group Band will perform the Last Post.

There will also be representatives from the Royal British Legion and veterans of the Royal Anglian Regiment who will be happy to talk about their personal experiences of war.
