Wards at the town’s nearest major hospital have been closed after an outbreak of norovirus.

The winter vomiting bug has entered Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, which yesterday (Tuesday) asked anyone who has been sick or had diarrhoea in the last 48 hours - or those who have had contact to those affected - to avoid coming in.

The affected wards are G6 and C8, which has had to close two bays, and no visiting is permitted apart from in exceptional circumstances.

“This bug is in the community and has unfortunately found its way into the hospital,” read a statement on the hospital website.

“We need to stop the spread of this bug and protect our patients. Under no circumstances should you come to the hospital if you have been sick or had diarrhoea in the last 48 hours.

“If you have been in close contact with someone who has had sickness and diarrhoea you are very likely to become ill – do not enter the hospital.

“Outpatient clinics are running as usual – but only for those who are free of sickness and diarrhoea.”

Children are also not being allowed into the hospital unless they are receiving treatment, or for compassionate reasons.

Earlier in the week five wards at Bath’s Royal United Hospital had to close because of the virus.

A spokesman for Addenbrooke’s asks those in doubt to seek medical advice from their GP, or NHS 11.
