Trains between Cambridge and Audley End were severely disrupted today by an overhead line problem in the Great Chesterford area.

All lines were blocked, with rail operator Greater Anglia estimating that disruption could last until 4pm.

Lines re-opened at around 3pm, with disruption continuing until around 4.30pm as trains returned to their correct place in the schedule.

Network Rail engineers were called to the problem, which affected services in both directions, this morning.

The 5.17am Kings Lynn to London Liverpool Street was the first train affected.

A half hourly train shuttle was put in place between Audley End and London Liverpool Street, and a rail replacement bus service was also organised between Audley End and Cambridge.

Greater Anglia apologised for the disruption.
