WORK on the One Minet Park, which was granted planning permission in August 2004 by Uttlesford District Council, will begin this Monday.

Chairman of the Saffron Walden Skateboard Group, Paul Ogborn, said the park should be open for the start of the summer holidays.

"Our aim was to build a facility for young people, which would not only provide a place to skate and ride BMX bikes, but would also give young people a venue to meet with friends."

The group consists of adults and youngsters and was formed to build a safe but challenging skatepark to replace the wooden ramps, originally on the site behind the Lord Butler Leisure Centre where the new park is to be built.

The park is due to be completed within 12 to 16 weeks and will be open for the start of the summer.

Builders Dreamland are constructing the park, which will be open from 8am to 10pm every day.

Planning permission for 14 floodlights was granted by UDC in January and benches, shelters and landscaping will surround the development.

"Thank you to the people for their encouragement and patience," Mr Ogborn added. "We hope the skatepark will be used by families and local youth groups and local skaters are keen to show off their skills to help and encourage those new to the sport.
