A MAN is fighting for his life in hospital after he was in collision with a car near Saffron Walden on Saturday night.

The 34-year-old from Haverhill was injured at about 11pm, on the Windmill Hill section of the B184.

A police spokesman said that the man suffered multiple fractures and was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.

She said: "The driver of a blue Alfa Romeo, a 49-year-old man from Southend, was travelling towards Saffron Walden from Little Chesterford. The driver was uninjured, but left shaken by the incident."

The East of England Ambulance Service received its first call alerting them to the incident at 10.58pm.

A spokesman for the service said: "We had an emergency care practitioner and a manager at the scene within six minutes, followed by an ambulance a couple of minutes later.

"The man was found in the road with multiple injuries - he had lacerations and abrasions to his head and face, fractures to both shoulders, which were also both dislocated, a fracture to his left arm, fractures to several ribs and fractures to both of his upper legs.

"He was conscious and medical crews administered fluids before taking him to Addenbrooke's."

Police closed off the road for four hours while they worked at the scene.

Investigating officer PC Dafydd Hughes said: "We still don't know why this man was in the road, so we need to find out exactly what happened before the crash.

"We'd like to speak to those motorists who were driving along this stretch of road between 10.30pm and 11pm, as well as other pedestrians.

"We believe there was a small silver car that stopped briefly at the scene and according to a witness, there was an individual who was seen near a footpath along the B184 holding a torch.

"In addition, we know the injured pedestrian had been enjoying an evening out with friends so we would like to speak to these people as they may be able to shed some light on how he came to be on that dark country road."

Anyone with information should call PC Hughes at Bocking Road Policing Unit on 01376 330722.

A motorist who frequently travels on the B184 and did not wish to be named, said he thought the road was treacherous and that an accident like this was waiting to happen.

"I travel along the B184 regularly and it can be quite a scary road, especially with the nights drawing in," he said. "There's always plenty of traffic in both directions, lots of blind bends, and not many cats' eyes, so it's pretty dangerous."

The police spokesman said the pedestrian was in a critical, life-threatening condition in hospital after undergoing extensive surgery on his injuries.
