They took to the streets in fancy dress. Austin Powers and Mini-Me, cops & robbers, the Mario Bros, and more. All were determined to have fun while raising cash for charity.
The event was the first-ever Duxford Soapbox Derby, held on Saturday which proved a huge success. Hundreds of spectators took to the streets to cheer on the 10 teams of two, who tackled the 1.5-mile course around the village in their decorated go-carts.
Event organiser Clive Bartram hailed the event as “brilliant” and thanked everyone who helped out or supported.
He said: “We’ve had so much support and there was a real community spirit around the village. It was a great way to get everyone involved, and the feedback has been really positive.” He added: “We lost two or three people in the village to cancer last year so this was held in their memory while raising money for a great cause.”
The winners of the race were Simon Bruce and Johnny Oliver, who were wearing horse heads during the event. After the derby and award presentation, an auction was held which raised nearly £250.
Hopes are high the derby can be held again next year – and possibly become a regular event in the village calendar.
