Uttlesford District Council chairman Eric Hicks hosted a visit to Saffron Walden’s historic Bridge End Garden on Wednesday as part of a fundraising event for his two nominated charities.

Representatives of neighbouring councils including the mayors of Brentwood, Castle Point, Chelmsford, Saffron Walden, Great Dunmow, East Herts, Epping Forest, Havering, Rochford, and Thurrock, were invited on the 90-minute guided exploration of the Grade II* listed gardens.

Head Gardener Mark Ropkins, who led the tour, said: “These are award-winning Victorian gardens, maintained in the Victorian style.

“We would like anyone visiting the garden to feel that they are seeing exactly what visitors 150 years ago might have seen, and take advantage of the peace and tranquillity of that time, which they may find lacking in today’s modern world.”

Following the tour, a buffet lunch was held in the Council Chamber, and a charity raffle was drawn, raising over £600 to be shared between St Clare Hospice and Cancer Research.

Cllr Hicks said: “I am delighted we were able to raise money for my nominated charities.

“And I would like to thank Mark for his excellent and knowledgeable tour of the gardens, which are a delight to visit, particularly on a lovely day like this.”

The gardens were restored to their former glory based on the detailed notes of the 19th century gardeners and the 1870 plan diagram. They are open all year round with the exception of Christmas Day. Opening times of the Walled Garden and maze may vary depending on season. Entry is free.
