Crowds lined the streets of Saffron Walden to welcome home soldiers from Carver Barracks in Wimbish, who have returned now for the final time from their campaign in Afghanistan.
Around 200 soldiers from 58 Field Squadron (EOD), 33 Engineer Regiment (EOD), including the Band of The Brigade of Gurkhas, marched from the Common carpark, departing at 10.45am this morning, on Thursday, December 11.
The soldiers from Operation Herrick then proceeded along Hill Street, George Street, High Street and King Street before entering the Market Place, where they were awarded campaign medals.
Mayor Sandra Eden gave a moving speech to the assembled crowds and soldiers, noting the regiment’s bravery in the face of adversity, and welcoming them home. Also in attendance was councillor Keith Artus, chairman of Uttlesford District Council.
Major Adam Jones, Officer Commanding 58 Field Squadron (EOD) said: “The parade provides an opportunity to recognise the contribution of all our soldiers based at the barracks including 58 Field Squadron (EOD) and to commemorate our injured soldiers and those who sadly paid the ultimate sacrifice. They will not be forgotten.”
